Instruction: When students were responding in writing to a text, a couple of students could not infer what the author was trying to tell them or why this story was written so I conferred with the students using their Just Right Books I shared with the students a list of reasons why writers write Writers write to inform- to give information about someone or something Writers write to entertain- to tell a story that is made up or from real life Writers write to persuade-to try to get a reader to do something, buy something, or believe something Writers write to instruct- to explain who to do something Then I talked to students about the authors intent in their books Readers ask, what is the author trying to tell me? Readers ask, why was this story written?
